“Katabasis in Plato’s Symposium”

Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy (31:1) 59-83.

Most of the scholarship on Plato's Symposium attends to the upward movement of the dialectic towards wisdom and knowledge that occurs in the dialogue through the speeches. This article begins a strand of scholarship intended to unfurl the importance of descent (katabasis) imagery as it appears in the drama of the dialogue, showing in particular how descent is equally as significant as ascent in genuine philosophizing, or 'the pursuit of wisdom.'
