Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom by Mary Catherine Bateson is an excellent book about options for people in their second adulthood. The second adulthood is the period after a lifetime career, raising children and paying the bills associated with family life. Ideally, this period should provide each of us with the opportunity for self-actualization which is the highest form of learning.

The author challenges us to understand our deepest priorities as human beings so that we can begin working on them before it is too late. Another important aspect of older age requires that we engage life and live it to the fullest.

In the later years, people begin to concern themselves with things they will pass on to posterity so that each of our lives will have had meaning in our world.

The author explains that older people vote more and become engaged with issues which transcend themselves. Many concern themselves with post-retirement living and scaling down expansive living quarters in favor of smaller houses and simpler living. The author explains that older people are in search of capturing a wholeness to living which may have eluded them earlier in life due to the hurried pace of modern living and the many demands placed on heads of households today.

The book discusses our reach to embrace the spiritual side of life in older age. This effort transcends the physical world to try to make sense of our finite existence and what awaits us in an afterlife which draws nearer with every breath we take.

Composing a Further Life is an important book which rounds out our knowledge and experiential domain by redirecting all of us to the most important things in life. Very often, these are the things which make life worth living for today.
