Wisdom Calls: the Moral Story of the Hebrew Bible

Reading the Old Testament as Hebrew Bible invites us to develop wisdom. The Torah and Former Prophets expose both the need for and limits of building morality around rules. The Latter Prophets offer internalized principles as the basis of morality, but also demonstrate the limit of principles. The Writings immerse readers into the debates and quandaries that constitute the culture wars of post-Exilic Israel after introducing us to Lady Wisdom who calls us to learn from her. The moral story of the Hebrew Bible thus suggests that moral development culminates with the wisdom needed for negotiating a world filled with conflicting advice about how to live. Intended for undergraduate and lay audiences, the book represents the integration of biblical studies and work in moral psychology.
