Igor Grossmann is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he leads the Wisdom and Culture Lab. (check out his website here: https://igorgrossmann.com/) In this podcast, we are discussing: 1) What science says about wisdom? 2) How can we cultivate wisdom? 3) Can wisdom help us address the challenges we face in the 21st century, such as AI and exponential technology?
Grossmann discusses the current science of wisdom noting that scientists agree that there are fundamental elements of wisdom. He further talks about his own definition of wisdom based on constructivism with two aspects of big wisdom and small wisdom. He suggests big wisdom includes the grand narratives on how to live a good life, be meaningful and the deep pursuit of eudaimonic happiness and flourishing while small wisdom is how you figure out what to do next in complex decision making.
Grossmann further discusses the complexity of Artificial Intelligence and wisdom; particularly when considering moral standards of democratic societies in terms of AI.
