Developing virtue in medical students: Suggestions for a classroom exercise using maxims

Abstract: Ethics coursework in medical schools has traditionally focused on achieving good outcomes for the patient and practicing according to ethical standards of conduct (Kotzee et al. 2017).  Instruction in “moral issues in medical practice such as values, rights and responsibilities related to physician behavior and decision making” is considered a basic standard of medical education (World Federation for Medical Education 2015). In recent years, medical  schools have expanded this focus to include character and virtue development.
