Dr. Zack Loveless, Director of Programming & Operations

"Cultivating Practical Wisdom in Medical Education".
In this talk, he describes a curricular initiative that helps medical trainees hone their virtues of character – including practical wisdom – and sustain their guiding values and well-being. The yearlong course is grounded in an Aristotelian conception of virtue and draws on physician experiences to highlight and discuss common challenges faced in medical practice (e.g. delivering bad news), the qualities that prepare one to persevere through such pressures (compassion, courage, honesty), and ways physicians have failed or succeeded in aptly navigating such situations in the past. Research paired with the course, demonstrates students who participated in the training increased in wisdom, wise reasoning, epistemic humility, and life satisfaction, while peer counterparts decline in each quality across the year. Preliminary data suggests students in the course also increased in compassion, fairness, purpose, and psychological well-being. The course holds promise for allaying the negative effects of medical training – declines in empathy, moral judgment and increases in burnout – while being adaptable to local institutions.
Loveless is Director of Programming and Operations at the Hyde Park Institute and a Lecturer in Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago. He received a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Chicago, an MA in Character Education from the University of Birmingham, and a BA in Philosophy from Auburn University. He leads and designs HPI programs in collaboration with University of Chicago faculty and administrators, and coordinates measurement of their impact. His research focuses on the role that reflection plays in the development and exercise of wisdom and character strengths.
